WELCOME!
My name is Bouchra Kachoub and I recently completed a PhD in Linguistics at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada. My general research interest revolves around Sociolinguistics, but I focus on the the sub-field of World Englishes. In particular, I investigate the range and depth of the functional uses of English in the Expanding Circle country of Morocco. During my PhD studies, I was supervised by Professor Suzanne K. Hilgendorf who is not only a leading scholar in World Englishes, but also a former student/supervisee of Braj B. Kachru. My secondary areas of interest include Second Language Learning, Computer Assisted Language Learning, and Foreign Language Pedagogy. I have co-published with my supervisor, Professor Suzanne K. Hilgendorf, a peer-reviewed article on the use of English in outdoor advertising in Morocco (English Today). Together, we were also invited to submit an article on the current issue of languages in the same North African context (Mélanges CRAPEL). I have had the chance to teach in various universities across three continents (North America, Africa, and the Middle East). While pursuing my PhD studies, I served as a Teaching Assistant in the Department of Linguistics at Simon Fraser University. While in this position, I also had the chance to work as a Research Assistant for several of my department's professors whose research span the field of phonology, second language learning, and World Englishes. Prior to that, I taught English and Study Skills at the University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) and the American University in the Emirates (AUE), both based in the metropolitan and multicultural city of Dubai. Previous to such positions, I served as an Instructor of English and Study Skills at SIST Sunderland in Casablanca, Morocco. Additionally, while I was pursuing my Master's degree in Applied Linguistics at Ohio University in Ohio, I was an Instructor of Arabic and English.
